Welcome to your very first Tour Date with Tree!
Every great tour begins with a first date, and ours kicked off this past Saturday night at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ. It was an evening full of friends, incredible songwriting, lots of laughs and the kind of intimacy you only get in a legendary listening room.
Ryan Smith kicked off the evening with an acoustic set that mixed his solo material with some favorites from Lazy Hero. The timing couldn’t have been better, as Lazy Hero’s brand-new self-titled EP was released that very day. Smith’s stage presence and heartfelt delivery made the packed room feel like a house show.
Next up was Tim Hause, making what he joked was his third or fourth Garden State appearance this year. “I’m just touring New Jersey now,” he laughed before launching into a soul-stirring set of songs from his solo records, along with fan favorites like “Fireflies” from his work with big brother Dave. “Tyrannosaurus RX” gave us a blend of vulnerability and ferocity that electrifies the room! Standing behind his cherry-red Gibson ES, Hause had the audience hanging on every word. We happily became part of the band, providing the rhythm section with perfectly timed handclaps on a few tunes.
Closing out the night was Greg Attonito, whose solo shows have become equal parts concert, storytelling session and in tonight's case, comedy. His set traveled through his career with The Bouncing Souls and included fan favorites like "Gone" and "Hopeless Romantic”. He sprinkled in some rarities like "Satelite”, and offered a glimpse into works in progress. We were treated to a lovely cover of The Replacements' "I Will Dare", and he played some brand new songs from Born to Be, The Souls’ next record arriving June 26. Hearing those in such an intimate setting before their official release was a gift!
If you’re looking to catch these artists live, head down the shore this weekend where The Bouncing Souls will host their annual Stoked for the Summer festival at The Stone Pony on June 27, while Hause will be performing as part of Asbury Underground earlier that same day.
Crossroads has long been one of New Jersey’s hidden gems, but evenings like this remind you exactly why. Between the outstanding food, some of the friendliest staff you’ll ever meet on the road, and a room that felt less like a concert and more like spending an evening with old friends…you can see why beloved musicians come back to play here year after year.
Thanks for joining me and I’ll save you a spot at the next show!
