Last March, a relatively unknown band opened for Jarod Clemons at Wonder Bar in Asbury Park for a benefit show to raise money for the victims of the L.A. wildfires. They figured the crowd would mainly consist of their closest friends since it was their first show. Those modest expectations went out the window as they took the stage in front of a packed house.
Over the next 20 months, Red Head Redemption worked hard to make a name for themselves and build a dedicated fanbase. They played multiple shows around Asbury Park, released their debut EP Sunny With A Chance of Fallout, and even made their NYC debut. Last month lead singer Kim Modica even got the chance to share the Park Stage with Clemons as he kicked off this year’s Sea Hear Now.
Not a bad start for a band born from an AP Kickball game and chance conversations in Kim Marie’s alley. Modica's mom would be proud of what they have achieved so far.
When I started BR! this past summer, the local alt rockers were a group that people said we absolutely needed to cover. Somehow, I haven’t seen them play live yet. That all changes next weekend though, as they present Femme Rock Fright Fest at Asbury Lanes on October 10. They will be joined by three other Jersey bands—indie dance punk rockers Not Yer Baby, the infamous psychedelic rock band The Azures, and Liv Bec, who "makes music like a breakup text and a Molotov cocktail". It's an eclectic lineup of artists and should be a fun night of music.
Modica said they were inspired by Olvia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields Music Festival to put together a showcase for female-fronted local bands. “It’s important to show that there is an appetite for the art that women can provide to the music scene, especially in such a male dominated industry”. She ultimately hopes that this could become an annual event in the town that now feels like home.
Tickets are still available. In addition to the music, there will be a costume contest, tarot card readings, and more spooky season fun. So come out and support some great local talent. You don’t want to miss it.
