Sean Tobin Turns Heartbreak Into Beauty

Grief is the natural, multi-faceted response to a significant loss. Countless artists have used their creative expression to process loss. Musically, songs like “Someone Like You”, “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, and “Landslide” have been born from the loss of a relationship. These songs have helped both the artist and the listener heal. They’ve helped us cope. They’ve helped us move on.
This Friday, Sean Tobin releases Banshee River, an album written over the past two years to help him process the heartbreak of his divorce. The ten songs were recorded in the living room of his Nashville home using an old Tascam four-track cassette recorder. He chose this method because he wanted the songs to sound “as human as possible”. They may not sound perfect, but it was the perfect way for him to tell this story.
You can tell Tobin poured his soul into these songs. Each was recorded in a single take…just Sean, his guitar, and a harmonica. The album is structured as a complete narrative, and he chose to release all ten tracks simultaneously rather than pull them out of context. “It’s about grief, reckoning, and making good of [redacted] situations,” says Tobin. “These songs need to be heard together”.
Writing these songs helped Tobin heal, and he hopes they will help others process their own grief as well. As someone who has felt similar heartbreak, listening to this album was cathartic. His lyrics echoed thoughts and feelings that were all too familiar, and made me wish this album existed twelve years ago. I’m not going to single out any one song, and instead urge you to listen to it from start to finish so you can appreciate the beauty he created from his grief.
Tobin is taking this story on the road with a mini-tour that kicked off on October 20 at The Bowery Vault in Nashville. The nearly sold out gig served as a record release show so he could share it with his hometown crew. In all, the self-funded tour spans six states through the end of November, and includes multiple stops in his native New Jersey. The final gig takes place in his old stomping grounds of Asbury Park on November 28.
Once the tour is finished, Tobin resumes work on the book that accompanies the new album. He’s hoping to get it published, but because it is so close to his heart, he wants to do it justice and is still looking for the right person to help. He is also working on his seventh album, which will be a full-band project, and possible due to the support of his fans who pledged more than $15,000 to make it a reality.
Banshee River releases on October 23. Be sure to check it out wherever you stream your music, or even better, grab a copy from Tobin directly.
